Leonardo Helicopter’s AW09 (Kopter) First Flight Powered by Safran Arriel 2K Engine
The Leonardo AW09 helicopter, formerly known as the Kopter SH-09, has completed its first flight with the Safran Helicopter Engines Arriel 2K engine on March 17, 2023. The flight took place at Kopter's facility in Mollis, Switzerland.
The Arriel 2K engine is the latest version of the Arriel family, which has accumulated more than 50 million flight hours on various helicopter types. The engine is rated at 1,000 shaft horsepower and features a dual-channel FADEC system.
The AW09 is a next generation single-engine helicopter that offers high speed, long range, high payload and versatility. The aircraft can accommodate up to eight passengers or two stretchers in various configurations. The AW09 also features a large cabin for its class with panoramic windows, a five-blade main rotor system and shrouded tail rotor.
Leonardo and Safran Helicopter Engines announced their partnership for the AW09 propulsion system on January 26, 2023. The two companies said they will provide innovative and competitive support solutions for customers, including Power-By-The-Hour (PBH) and Support-By-the-Hour (SBH) contracts as well as digital services.
The AW09 is expected to enter service in 2024.
